Important Changes to Google’s CSS Programme

As of November 1st 2018, Google are changing how their CSS programme works for merchants.

Potential 20% saving in CPC

The 20% reduction in PLA fees remains unaffected. This means that merchants will continue to see a potential decrease in cost-per-click of up to 20%, thanks to the CSS programme.

Rebate Calculated Per Calendar Month

From November 1st, rebates are calculated per calendar month, where previously they were calculated over a rolling 30 day period. This makes it easier for you to see how much you’ve been credited through the CSS programme per month.

Many retailers will have made the transition to CSS in the middle of a month. There should be no disruption – here’s an example of how the change will affect you.

If you were to sign up for CSS on the 14th of the month, you’ll receive your rolling 30-day rebate for September 14th to October 14th as normal. You’ll then be given a second rebate for the dates between October 15th and October 31st. From November 1st, your rebate calculations will transition over to the new format of calendar month calculation.

Rebate Percentage Change

From the launch of CSS a few months ago up until October 31st, Google have offered a staggered percentage of your shopping spend returned to your Google Ads account as a ‘rebate’. This meant that each month, a merchant could qualify for a different % rebate dependent on their shopping spend.

As of November 1st, Google have simplified the rebate criteria for merchants. Provided your shopping spend exceeds $10 USD in the calendar month, Google will rebate your Google Ads account with 5% of your shopping spend through CSS up to a maximum of $100,000 USD.

The rebate monies will continue to be added to your Google Ads account, as has been the case since the launch of CSS.

End of The Rebate

Google have also announced a date for when their rebate program will end, and the date for your calendar is December 31st, 2018. This means that merchants will continue to see rebates on their shopping spend up until the end of the calendar year.

The 20% saving on your Cost-Per-Click (CPC) through CSS will remain past December.
