Glen Barker - Profile

Glen started out as a Junior PPC Account Manager in 2015 and has now progressed to a valued Senior PPC Account Manager. As we’re recruiting for another apprentice, we interviewed Glen to find out what life was like joining Mabo as an apprentice…

What was the best thing about being an apprentice at Mabo?

A big thing for me when I first started was how valued I felt. It wasn’t as if I was viewed any differently to the rest of the team, even though I was the only apprentice. One of the first things I was really surprised at as well was the environment. Loads of companies talk about having a ‘relaxed working environment’ but Mabo is actually true to their word. Everyone is so positive and relaxed all the time, but because everyone enjoys what they do, it’s still really productive.

What is your favourite thing about working at Mabo?

It’s actually really difficult to pick just one thing. The working environment is definitely a massive thing for me, it just encapsulates all that’s good about Mabo. There’s very little pressure forced on us, as long as you’re doing your job and giving it your all then there’s never a problem. I think it definitely helps that I enjoy what the job entails. Obviously, I had no experience before I came to Mabo, so I wasn’t 100% sure what I was letting myself in for, but that changed from day 1. The team make a huge difference to your working day too, everyone is like one massive family, everyone’s happy to help and nobody judges you for maybe not being sure or needing a hand.

What sort of support did Mabo provide during your apprenticeship?

Mabo was there literally every step of the way. It didn’t matter what help I needed, I honestly didn’t struggle with anything. Probably most importantly they helped me mature professionally, teaching me how to conduct myself in certain ways, helping me develop existing skills and learn new ones.

Why would you recommend someone going for an apprenticeship at Mabo?

It’s a brilliant opportunity for anyone looking to learn, earn and progress. The team is constantly growing, every day is different, and it’s so easy to come to work – you don’t feel pressured or intimidated, it’s just a nice place to be. The atmosphere and team make you feel comfortable from day one which makes a real difference when you have to come to work every day.

Did you have any worries about working at Mabo?

Like I said, I’d never done anything like this before, so it was all totally new to me which was a bit of a daunting thought. I could tell from my first day though that I didn’t have anything to worry about. There was plenty of help and guidance and now my job comes second nature to me. I obviously wondered what it would be like when I came to the end of my apprenticeship, but it was a really natural progression. Looking back it’s unreal how much I’ve learnt, I gradually got given more responsibility so when the end of my apprenticeship came, I felt really prepared and wasn’t thrown in at the deep end.
